All Rise to Buttermere's Take of Old-World French Traditions

Galette des Rois

A sweet tradition 👑

Epiphany, a holiday commemorated by many around the world but not one that is commonly ranked top-of-mind in Vancouver, is making a stately comeback byway of a sweet, exquisite offering.

Known as the 12th day after Christmas and the feast of kings, Epiphany is widely and customarily celebrated with galette des rois, also known as king’s cake. By tradition, a galette des rois in the North of France is a layered, flaky puff pastry with a frangipane or apple filing. Hidden inside each galette des rois is one lucky bean, called la fève. The cake is then divided amongst all members of the household and the person who discovers the fève is then deemed honourary king or queen for the day. In the modern day, a figurine is used to symbolize infant Jesus and as a means to avoid the likelihood of swallowing the bean.

Jamie Tung from Buttermere is offering two versions of the galette des rois from January 6th – 31st, timing it just as it is celebrated around the world. Available in two flavours of choice, those who prefer to abide to traditional flavours may choose the sweet almond frangipane filling whereas the more adventurous, or a novice to the tradition, may opt to try the Tieguanyin. Tieguanyin is a full-bodied oolong tea familiar to tea enthusiasts and populations of Asian descent; with hints of floral and a subtle caramel taste, this modern flavour infusion is a fresh take on the French classic.

“Vancouver has a vibrant and diverse community, so by also offering a non-traditional option for what would otherwise be a classic galette des rois, my hope is to entice cultural exploration and education while enjoying delightful indulgences”, explains Jamie Tung.

Buttermere’s charming galette des rois is perfect for eight and is served with a hidden fève along with a paper crown to be donned by the successful royal. As there will be an inedible trinket placed within the galette des rois, a high-level of caution must be taken while consuming. This traditional yet playful cake is only for pre-order online with limited quantities per day and pick-up available Thursday to Sunday. At $42 each, this is a noble price to pay to be king or queen for a day!
